Inquirers Class
Parishioners who are new to the Episcopal Church have an opportunity to learn about what it means to be an Episcopalian in the Inquirers Class. A six-week course taught by the clergy, the Inquirers Class covers such topics as:
- The Bible-An Overview
- Church History in a Capsule
- Ethical and Moral Stands of the Church
- The Prayer Book-A Walk-through
- St. Peter's-Our History and Current Practice
- About the Sacraments, including Confirmation
Inquirers Class is normally a requirement for people being Confirmed or Received by the Bishop. The Cathedral in Newark hosts Confirmation services in the spring each year, so Inquirers Classes are usually held in the weeks following Easter. See the link, or the Parish Calendar, for dates.
Anyone is welcome to join the classes, including those who do not want Confirmation but are only inquiring, and those who just want a refresher course.
Adult Forums
Adult Forums are held each Sunday between the 9:15 and 11:15 services. The program offers interesting speakers who may be members of the parish, or representatives of outside groups who want to make their programs known. Recent programs have included a parishioner defining "Just War," and a sister from the Convent of St. John Baptist telling of her work in an orphanage in Cameroon. The vestry occasionally uses these forums to inform the congregation of important parish issues, such as the budget. A typical audience is 15 to 30 persons, with an equal or greater number of folks remaining in the parish hall for coffee hour.
Lenten Series
St. Peter's usually offers a bread-and-soup supper and discussion on Wednesdays evening during Lent.
Bible Study
A Women's Bible Study group currently meets on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. During the past few years, St. Peter's has offered studies of the Book of Acts, the letters of Paul, and an ongoing study on Thursdays just before the 12:15 Eucharist. Watch the announcements on the front page of this site, or see This Week at St. Peter's for news of current and upcoming classes.
The Parish Library
Housed on the second floor of the parish hall, this library contains a collection of theological and devotional books as well as a small collection of audio tapes available for loan. It is one of the best-kept secrets at St. Peter's and is seriously under-utilized. In addition, a children's library is housed in the undercroft with good materials suitable for children.
